What Is Your Car Really Worth?
If you’re thinking about upgrading your ride, one of the first questions you’ll ask is:
“What’s my current car worth?”
At Dream Work Automotive, we believe in transparency and education, so here’s a breakdown of how trade-in value is determined — and how you can make sure you’re getting the most for your vehicle.
Trade-in value is the amount a dealership is willing to offer for your current vehicle when you’re using it toward the purchase of another. Unlike private party sales, the value includes convenience — quick sale, no personal listing or negotiation — and is often applied as a down payment or credit toward your next car.
There’s no one-size-fits-all formula, but here are the key factors we use when calculating trade-in value:
- Year, Make and Model, Some vehicles naturally hold value better than others. Cars known for reliability, safety, and resale demand tend to score higher trade-in value. Search what are the best vehicles for their trade in value
- Mileage, Lower mileage = higher value. A car with 50,000 miles will typically be worth significantly more than the same model with 150,000 miles.
- Vehicle Condition, From cosmetic scratches to engine performance — condition matters. We assess Interior wear and tear, Exterior dents, dings, or rust, Mechanical issues or warning lights and Maintenance history
- Market Demand, Is your vehicle something people are actively searching for? SUVs, fuel-efficient models, and trucks are especially hot right now — and Charlotte’s market trends play a big role.
- Vehicle History Report, Accidents, title status, and ownership history can raise red flags. A clean CARFAX can increase value, while reported incidents might reduce your offer.
- Current Inventory levels, If we have 5 cars just like yours on the lot, the value may shift slightly to reflect supply. But if your vehicle fills a gap in our lineup — bonus points!
How to Get the Most for Your Trade-In
Here are 3 ways to boost your car’s value before you trade it in:
- Detail your car — a clean vehicle makes a great first impression.
- Fix minor issues — replace burned-out lights, top off fluids, and clear warning lights if possible.
- Bring documentation — service records, original manuals, and extra keys help your case!
